Morbidity and hope

Like any good New Yorker, I sometimes shoot in the subway. There exists an entirely separate and distinct visual environment down there in those tunnels.

Somewhere down these tracks is Manhattan.

The train can be one of those places where one might try to avoid eye contact with anyone.

On the contrary, if you’re more like me you often talk to strangers, especially those who seem more receptive to conversation. Michele was one of those people. Her little girl Maya was dosing with one of the most unconcerned looks I have ever seen on anyone’s face. A photo was taken, four in fact, and together they’re Maya on the 1.
